6th Annual IIDR Trainee Day

On Wednesday October 26, 2016, the IIDR celebrated the 6th Annual Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research Trainee Day. This day is dedicated to the work of the IIDR students and postdoctoral fellows.

The theme for this year’s event was “World-Changing People, Research and Ideas”. Through a day of talks and poster presentations, it was evident that these trainees have ideas that indeed are change enablers.

The keynote speaker this year, Dr. Arturo Casadevall provided a riveting talk on his thoughts on the origins of virulence.

Special guests included the family of Michael Kamin Hart, a promising second year Master’s student who passed away in 2011 following a courageous battle with lymphoma.

In 2012, the Michael Kamin Hart Scholarship was established to award a promising Master’s student who demonstrates academic excellence with the same enthusiasm as Michael. Since then, the generous support of Michael’s family and friends has enabled the endowment to grow to now include a PhD award, two summer undergraduate awards and new this year a technical staff award.

Recipients of this year’s Michael Kamin Hart Scholarship awards were, Sara Dizzell (Master’s); Fiona Whelan (PhD); Savannah Colameco (Undergraduate); Michael Ranieri (Undergraduate) and Kalinka Koteva (technical staff).
