Trainee Research Day to showcase IIDR’s student talent

2010 Trainee Research Day

July 18, 2012 - Within the labs of the 36 investigators of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research, more than 400 trainees are helping forge the future of science.

On November 2, 2012, they will have the opportunity to present their innovative work at the second annual Trainee Research Day, to be held at the Farncombe Institute Atrium from 9 am to 6 pm.

Registration has opened for this full-day event that will give IIDR graduate students and postdoctoral fellows the opportunity to present their research and network with researchers and peers.

“The Trainee Day is a fantastic opportunity for trainees to explain to their peers the significance of the research that they perform in the IIDR laboratories,” says organizer Joaquin Ortega, IIDR member and Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences. “A comprehensive scientific training is more than the skills you learn at the bench. Successful researchers are also great communicators that are able to explain to their peers the essence and impact of their scientific results.”

Oral and poster presentations will allow trainees to showcase their work and research progress. Two $1,000 Gulliver Prizes for best graduate and postdoctoral submissions will be awarded and the winner of the Michael Kamin Hart Memorial Scholarship will give an oral presentation. Scholarships and prizes will be awarded at a social gathering from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Faculty Club. Lunch will be provided in the Ewart Angus Centre.

“The IIDR training day is exciting as it highlights cutting-edge research and gives graduate students and post-docs the opportunity to present their work and share their ideas in front of peers and experts with different research backgrounds,” says Ahmad Jomaa, a graduate student in Ortega's lab who received the Gulliver Prize for Graduate Students in 2009. “The trainee day also gives recognition to students and trainees who have shown great promise and excellence in their research.”
