Dr. Fiona Smaill is a Medical Microbiologist at the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program and a consultant in Infectious Diseases at Hamilton Health Sciences. She is actively involved in clinical trials in HIV management, the development of vaccines for tuberculosis, and the management of infections in pregnancy. Her interest in HIV infection includes conducting multi-centre trials to evaluate the efficacy and side-effects of different antiretroviral regimens, management of HIV-related co-morbidities, and work on gender differences in the management of HIV infection. She is also working with Dr. Xing on an adenovirus-based vaccine for tuberculosis, and they are currently running a phase 1 clinical trial to evaluate their novel TB vaccine in healthy volunteers.
Dr. Smaill has an ongoing commitment to keep updated several Cochrane Systematic Reviews related to the management of infections in pregnancy, with a focus on the treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria and antibiotic prophylaxis for cesarean sections.
