IIDR Experts Recognized with Renewed Canada Research Chairs
Nine McMaster researchers have been recently recognised by the federal government with an investment of nearly $10 million from the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program – two new CRCs and seven renewed. Two of these renewed CRCs were granted through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to IIDR members Dr. Michael Surette and Dr. Nathan Magarvey.
Holding a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Interdisciplinary Microbiome Research, Dr. Michael Surette uses molecular profiling and state-of-the-art genome sequencing to study the human microbiome and its role in human development and health. Dr. Nathan Magarvey holds a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Chemical Biology and Natural Products, and is interested in the discovery and genomic mining of small molecules that are produced by environmental and human-associated microbes and that could be used in the development of new medicines. Nathan was also awarded $240,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund in support of research infrastructure. The aim of both McMaster professors is the development of new therapies for the treatment of disease.
The CRC Program enables researchers to further their work, improve Canada’s international competitiveness, and train the next generation of leaders.
