Bacteriophages ("phages") are bacteria-specific viruses. They outnumber their hosts 10:1 and are thought to be responsible for the death of 40% of bacteria every day. The Hynes Lab studies the role of phages in shaping bacterial communities, such as those of the gut microbiome, and leverages this information to exploit the activities of phages for therapeutic purposes.
