Hormonal Influence on HIV-1 Transmission in the Female Genital Tract: New Insights from Systems Biology
Approximately 2 million new HIV-1 infections arise each year and disproportionately affect young women. Yet, the mechanisms that regulate HIV-1 susceptibility within the female genital tract are poorly understood.
In a review led by Masters student Haley Dupont of Dr. Charu Kaushic’s research lab, the team describes our current understanding of the acute events that occur in the female genital tract following HIV-1 exposure.
Considering evidence from recent transcriptomic and proteomic studies, the team goes further to highlight the potential influence of endogenous and exogenous sex hormones on HIV-1 susceptibility in the female genital tract, providing important new insights on this complex interaction.
