King’s Christian Collegiate Student Receives IIDR Internship Award at BASEF 2018
A huge congratulations to Ms. Evlyn Sun, a grade 12 student at King’s Christian Collegiate, Oakville, for receiving the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research (IIDR) Internship Award at the 58th Annual Bay Area Science & Engineering Fair (BASEF).
Evlyn’s project, entitled ‘Investigating the Antibacterial Properties of Silver Nanoparticles on Staphylococcus Epidermis’, was selected as the best senior student project in the category of infectious disease, drug discovery, or human health. As the recipient of this award, Evlyn will be given the unique opportunity to work for a period of six weeks during the summer of 2018 in a McMaster University laboratory, gaining invaluable experience in a scientific setting.
Further congratulations are extended to the runner-up award recipients, whose projects were highlighted for their scientific excellence in this field. Kalina Morrison, a grade 12 student at King’s Christian Collegiate, Oakville received the first runner-up award for her project ‘Determining whether the Vitamin C in Yellow Peppers is affected by Microwaves’. The second runner-up award went to Jacob Meleka and Michael Meleka from Grades 11 and 12 respectively at North Park Collegiate and Vocational School, Brantford, for their project ‘The Power of pH’.
The IIDR is a proud sponsor of BASEF, which is one of the oldest, continuously running regional science fairs in Canada. BASEF is a registered charity relying entirely on volunteers and sponsors, with the mission of promoting project-based science and encouraging youth to conduct research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) using the scientific method or engineering design process.
The IIDR looks forward to following the bright futures of these distinguished young scholars, and to supporting BASEF again in 2019.
